201 Bend Tools and Their Functions

BEND DIE SET

Bend Die - The bend die is what the tube gets wrapped around during the bend. The radius it is machined to establishes the center line radius of bend. Features include a tube groove around the outside diameter, a clamp straight, a through hole for mounting, a centering ring, a drive key, and many times, captive lips to help align the clamp and pressure dies with the tube grove.

Clamp Die - The clamp die holds the tube in place against the clamp straight of the bend die and prevents the tube from slipping during bending. Most clamp dies are 2.5 to 3.5 times as long as the tube outside diameter. Features include a tube groove and a mounting / drive slot on the opposite side.

Pressure Die - The pressure die holds the tube in place against the tangent point of the bend at the bend die and applies enough force to exceed the bending moment of the tube and to iron out potential wrinkles on the inside of the bend through the mandrel body against the wiper and bend die. Features include a tube groove and a mounting / drive slot on the opposite side.

Mandrel - The mandrel body rides inside the tube ending just beyond the tangent point, it connects to the machine via a long rod or tube attached to the back of the machine. The mandrel body helps to iron out potential wrinkles on the inside of the bend by transfering pressure die force to the tube between the wiper and bend die. The mandrel balls extend well beyond the tangent point into the bend area and help reduce tube collapse or ovality in the bend area.

Wiper Die

Wiper Die - The wiper die fills the gap between the bend die and the straight tube approaching the bend die and helps prevent wrinkles on the inside of the bend. Features include a radiused end that fits in the tube groove of the bend die and narrows to a very sharp edge, and a tube groove on the opposite side.

Collet - The collet connects the back end of the tube to the machine at the nose of the carriage. It clamps on the tube and holds it securely during plane of bend and distance between bend moves. Features include several sections that are machined to fit the tube outside diameter, and many times include a ridge at the back to act as a tube stop.
