203 Qualify Machine Repeatability

Qualifying machine repeatability is not a big job, but needs to be done every 500 to 800 hours of operation. The reason for doing it is to catch mechanical problems like loose mounting bolts, loose belts, stretched chains, and worn gear reducers before they can affect production.

On a manual machine set a dial indicator to read the final position of the swing arm at 180 degrees. Then cycle it 10 or 20 times and note the range of the results for future comparison.

On a CNC machine check each axis of motion:
Y, B, and C on simple machines
X, and Z on the carriage or bend head for CNC multistack
mandrel, clamp die and pressure die positions on all electronic machines

Many times the left to right motion of the carriage is cushioned with springs in case of collisions, if this is the case, try to read off of the ball screw nut at the carriage assembly.
