204 Mounting the Tooling

mounting tools

Mount the bend, clamp and pressure dies. Line up tube grooves of the clamp and pressure dies with the bend die.

  • Mount the bend die and tighten it in place.
  • Depending on the mounts, some people , but leave the clamp and pressure die loose. They close the dies on a solid bar the same OD as the tube and then tighten up the clamp and pressure dies.
  • Most people mount the tools loosely, partially close them, and sight down through the tube groove to get them close. They then fully close the dies, and use their finger to feel if one die is higher or lower.
  • The use of "captive lip" style tooling greatly simplifies this procedure.

Indicate the tube grooves of the bend and pressure dies the same way as the mounting surfaces, per the above diagram.

Adjust, with shims if needed, to get the tube grooves parallel to the bend die.

Set clamp and pressure die positions in and out (all electronic, including a pressure value).

Mount and set the mandrel so that the end of the mandrel body is about .062" beyond the tangent point of the bend die.

Mount and set the wiper die with a tube or same OD bar clamped to the bend die so that the tip is at or just short of the tangent point of the bend die, the tube groove is aligned, and there is about a .062" gap between the back of the wiper die and the tube.

Mount the collet or segments to the nose of the carriage.
